Occupational Therapy

The goal of occupational therapy is to promote health and wellness through occupation.

Life is made up of meaningful daily activities or occupations, like getting washed, gardening, preparing meals, painting, doing laundry, and working. Occupations are part of life; they define people and reflect how they perceive themselves. Occupations give meaning to life.

The main objective of occupational therapy is to make it possible for everyone to take part in the activities of daily living. Physical or mental health problems (stroke, surgery, depression, dementia, developmental disorders, etc.) may make everyday activities difficult.

Occupational therapy serves patients of all ages, from newborns to seniors, through various health care programs such as those provided by the nursing units of the Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont University Hospital Centre (DGLDUHC), the Stella-Maris-de-Kent Hospital (SMKH), and the Veterans’ Health Centre (VHC). Occupational therapy also serves patients through ambulatory care services provided in pediatrics, positioning, hand therapy, driving assessments, and neurology.

The Occupational Therapy team includes:

  • Twelve occupational therapists and three rehabilitation assistants at the DGLDUHC;
  • One occupational therapist at the SMKH;
  • One occupational therapist and one rehabilitation assistant at the VHC;
  • Three occupational therapists in the Mental Health Program.

Occupational therapy services are provided on the recommendation of a physician or health professional.
